E-Business Library > intent driven search from Yahoo
[customer experience strategy - by Karl Long] Yahoo’s concept of intent driven search provides a pretty useful customer experience, but the hidden goldmine IMHO is market research. If yahoo is an advertising company more than a search company then asking users if they’re “buying” when they’re doing a search is killer market research. It’s the age old retail strategy of “what is your time frame for this purchase” or more bluntly “are you ready to buy”, “let me go and talk to my manager and see if we can get you a deal TODAY”. It could open the door to differential pricing for advertisers who pay more for “shopping” orientated search than research, or even time limited offers being shown to people who are “shopping”.

[CoolBusinessIdeas.com - Premier Source of New Business Ideas and Opportunities] (Virtual) Cave Exploration: The folks from a new kind of search company, Splunk Technology, can only hope they do one-tenth as well. The tiny San Francisco startup is out to search not the World Wide Web but the contents of corporations' vast and complex data centers. The name is a takeoff on spelunking, the exploration of caves. The company's founders decided to take the name after they heard from early testers of their technology that it was like diving into the dark depths of the data center and poking around.

It's more evidence of the kind of innovation and creativity that emerges when you open things up a bit and let the world remix your data and services.

So instead of having to spend a lot of timesearching and assembling all the information you're after, thiscontextual search technology could incorporate that context (the stuffyou were reading at you moment you decided that you wanted to knowmore) to find the most relevant results.
[Ysearchblog.com] Yahoo! Search blog: Yahoo! Video Search Beta: But there's more to the story here than the blossoming world ofon-line video and building a video search system: it's often not easyfor a web crawler to find downloadable and streaming video content.Unlike web images and most audio files, videos aren't always easy todiscover. In many cases, they're hidden behind complex JavaScript, Flash-based players, and other non-crawler friendly obstacles. That'sexactly why we've talking to a lot of our existing media partners, many of whom have sizeable video assets which have yet to be indexed.
