http://actuality.wahgnube.org [Actuality.wahgnube.org] actuality . log » Blog Archive » Deja vu: This was a horrible pain, because though critical work-like data existed more so in the GNU/Linux partitions, there was still a lot of arbitrary junk (but my junk, you know, photos, ogg vorbis files …) sitting on the windows partitions. The primary reason for this being one OS could read the other’s partitions, but the other way around was not so seamless. Anywho, I grudgingly decided to find the original HP discs, only to remember the freaking things totally wipe out the hard drive before reinstalling 4 year old buggy software — not particularly useful, or fun. So, I painstakingly moved relevant data out of this machine to others with large drives (scp is your friend) at work, went out and bought an OS disc, redid things from scratch, mostly, and slowly moved the data back in.

''It's like having a little safe inside your computer,'' said Bob Meinschein, an Intel security architect. ''On the corporate side the value is much clearer,'' he added, ''but over time the consumer value of this technology will become clear as well'' as more people shop and do other business transactions online.

A colleague who was also busy installing a Linux on his Mac unsurprisingly told me “I’m not about to pay $60 for a Linux distro, so YDL’s clearly not for me.” What he didn’t realize was that after a few weeks of selling the new distro, the four install ISO images were made available on the Yellow Dog site as free downloads. Nonetheless, it suggests that the Yellow Dog folk, TerraSoft, would do well to have a countdown timer to the free downloads being available or something that would let new customers know that it was a “when” not an “if” regarding getting a free copy of YDL4.
